DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY MEDICINE


Brief Information about the Department:

The Department of Veterinary Medicine, CVSc&AH, Selesih, was started in the year 2001. The department is having following objectives:  

·         To impart education in Veterinary Medicine to BVSc&AH, MVSc and PhD students.

·         To provide medical treatment to sick animals and to train BVSc&AH, MVSc and PhD students to manage the clinical cases.

·         To offer guidance to research students.

·         To give advice to animal owners on disease management and prevention. 

Teaching

The Department is currently offering the courses as per MSVE-2016 syllabus for BVSc&AH students and ICAR syllabus for MVSc and PhD students.

Research

The faculties of the department have been involved in various research activities under PG (MVSc and PhD) degree programmes as well as handled various research project funded by DBT, DST, RKVY, etc.

The main research areas are:

·         Epidemiology and clinico-pathological studies of infectious and non-infectious and haemoparasitic diseases of livestock, and companion animals in North East region of India and their therapeutic management.

·         Identification, documentation, phytochemical screening, and cytotoxicity evaluation of medicinal plants commonly used in ethno-veterinary medicines native to north east region of India, and evaluation of their therapeutic and pharmacological efficacy (such as antidiarrhoeal, antibacterial, antidiabetic, organ protective and acaricidal properties) in animals.

·         Epidemiology and clinico-pathological studies of metabolic and deficiency diseases of livestock, and companion animals in North East region of India and their therapeutic management

The department has formulated two herbal preparations, one ointment for the management of skin diseases and another teat dip solution for prevention of bovine mastitis. Till now, the department has done research works on bovine mastitis, ethno-veterinary medicine, haemoprotozoan diseases of large and companion animals, viral diseases such as foot and mouth disease, canine parvoviral infection and canine distemper, important zoonotic diseases like tuberculosis, ectoparasitic diseases, and metabolic and deficiency diseases in Mizoram and north-eastern states of India.

 

Extension 

The Department is involved in various extension programmes on livestock and poultry production. The faculties of the department act as expert members in field disease investigation and their management and prevention. Moreover, the faculties perform OPD duties in Veterinary Clinical Complex (VCC) of the College. The Department has been regularly conducting need based short training courses for Line Department.

Facilities

 

The Department of Veterinary Medicine is equipped with basic and advanced equipments needed for teaching and research activities. Equipments and apparatus available in the department are Automated blood cell counter (MS4e-Vet, IDEXX Vetautoread), Biochemistry analyser, Freezer (-20° C), Haemocytometer, Trinocular microscope (Fluorescent), Light compound microscope, Digital microscope, ELISA reader, Thermocycler, Electrophoresis apparatus, Ultraviolet (UV) light in a gel documentation system, High speed centrifuge machine, Water bath, Distillation apparatus, Vertical autoclave apparatus, Hot air oven, BOD incubator, Bio-safety cabinet, Weighing balance, pH meter, Distillation Unit, Ophthalmoscope, Urine Analyser, etc.
