Name of the Department: Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology

Brief Information about the Department:

The Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology, earlier Department of Veterinary Public Health, was established alongside the inception of College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry in 1998, a constituent college of Central Agricultural University (Imphal). In 2009, the Department was renamed as Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology with the addition of Epidemiology component in accordance to the ICAR mandates.

Since its inception, the Department made successful progress by keeping pace with time based need of teaching, research and extension activities.  The Department has been offering undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral programme concentrated on Food safety, Epidemiology, Zoonoses, Environmental Hygiene and Public Health. The departmental laboratory has its own identification for conducting quality research works on epidemiological aspects of zoonoses and food safety issues of regional significance.

The departmental laboratory is well equipped for basic and applied research works with significant contribution on bacteriological quality monitoring, detection of adulterants and preservatives in milk, meat and their products, characterization of major food borne pathogens, along with bacterial, viral and protozoal zoonotic pathogens. Research works are being undertaken in recent years on the ethnic fermented food products from different states of North Eastern Region in the field microbial consortia, probiotic properties, quality control and shelf life extension in its traditional and laboratory settings by deploying advanced molecular techniques. The Department has successfully implemented eight research projects with more than forty publications in high rated national and international journals.

The Department has been regularly conducting need based short  training courses for Line Department Personnel, farmers and butchers along with awareness workshops among general public on various aspects of zoonotic disease epidemiology and food safety.
